During the College days; we were fond of using the common
idea of Appellation called Nickname. Either by one means or the other; you will
have an informal name, a label or tag from friend, classmate or your class
teacher.
It is observed that some nicknames emanate from real-names of the bearers while some are descriptions of personal features of the nicknamed. The nicknames may describe the persons’ facial appearance, skin colour, their ability, their figure or the opposite quality which may be mocking. Again, the size of one’s body can earn him/her a nickname. Fat and slim people are accorded nicknames that proportionate their body sizes.
It is
also observed that some nicknames are given to students due to abilities, special
skill or quality being possessed by the students. Students who exhibit
dexterity, ingenuity and creativity in class are called by their peers as
“sharp brain”, “shark” etc which all seek to describe the styling abilities of
the students concerned. It is expected that nicknames that seem to portray the
styling abilities of students would encourage the bearers to fully participate
in class unlike those that have the tendency to ridicule, scorn and demean the
nicknamed. It would be expected that in classes were students’ exceptional and
unprecedented contributions to discussions earn them nicknames and their
concomitant popularity students would be inspired to fully and actively participate
in academic work.
My days in
college were full of sort of tags and nickname and I know someone familiar with
my appellation will start laughing. I got one while I was in football
academy.
[Someone
will say: Do you know how to play football?
Yes I got enrolled in a football club during high school days
as a Goal-keeper but my style were boyish and girlish. I got another nickname which was the name of
my bus-stop(that is the junction of my house);we students were fond of moving
in mass to our respective home at School at Closing time. That and more funny,
cute and weird name I got; but I tell you, I will not permit anybody call me
that this day, they don’t tally or suit my personality.
Many online nicknames generating site will advise you into
getting one which will suit your personality and into a playing sort of quiz
which always resulted into name classify into
Cute nickname
Super hero name
Villain nickname
Monster Nickname and
All out weird nickname
Here, in Nigeria we do appreciate diverse appellation but
there are some you will not love to be call; the most common word which are bit
positive and fair in description could be Home boy, Akowe, NNa, My Guys,
Chicks, paddy Mi, Shorty, Baba Giga, Nigbati-ngbati, Aboki, Oloye, Egbon,
Chairman, Bros, Alaye, Ogbologbo, Baba London, Lay about, Effeco, Lepa, Orobo,
Omoba, Opeke, Bomboy, Otunba, and sort of names attributed to ones character,
complexion, body composition and display
of behavior.
Identifying people with names other than their
real names has the tendency to negatively or positively affect the bearers of
fad names. It is reasoned that nicknames can affect the way people behave and
how they feel about themselves. It is, therefore, expedient for all to be
concerned with helping ourselves develop positive self-concept to enable us walk
in purpose and achieve our dream effectively. All acts that seem to thwart this
effort need not be tolerated in our life.
Amb. Samuel AlabiBut I tell you, if you are going somewhere great to happen and you think having a label, a tag, a by-name, a pet name, an epithet or a nickname has got a lot to do with you and your degree of influence, your working in purpose, worth and accuracy. Then, you must consider what label you must have.
